Technology Integration in the 21st Century SchoolsTechnology has been a powerful tool in shaping and improving the school environment. However, some schools and teachers find it difficult to use technology and integrate it into their curriculum. One factor that prevents true integration of technology tools into the classroom is the lack of resources (limited technology, access, and technical support) in schools. Some schools just don`t have enough budget and cannot afford to buy technology resources for the students to use. Another barrier is lack of technology knowledge on teachers. Even when the proper resources are present, some teachers often struggle with an inadequate knowledge of using a new device, an app, or online resources. For many teachers, particularly those who did not grow up with computers or the internet, technology can be a challenge. The school leadership can also be a barrier to effective integration of technology in the classroom. When principals are unsupportive about the technology usage in the classroom, then the technology is hard to implement because they are the one holding the budget and have the power to finance different technology initiatives in school.
In 5-10 years from now, the K-12 schools will focus more in developing the curriculum to create authentic learning experiences for students. Authentic learning experiences bring students in touch with real-world problems and work situations. Horizon Report (2017) writes: “Through active partnerships with local organizations, learners can experience the future that awaits them outside school and develop essential skills that benefit them beyond the classroom”. Robotics and virtual reality programs for schools will continue to grow and develop as part of the school curriculum. As pedagogies that favor student-centered learning approaches continue to take hold across the world, tools such as VR that enable more experiential learning opportunities are increasingly valued (Horizon, 2017).
